Japan Golf Trip, 11 Days | Osaka to Tokyo: Kyoto, Atami, Kawana and Beyond

A Private Golf Journey for Three American Couples

Three Chinese-American couples flew in from Los Angeles with their golf bags and one clear goal: a Japan trip where they could actually relax. Not just play a few rounds and move on, but a real vacation — one where everything was taken care of before they landed.

No dealing with tee time reservations in Japanese. No dragging golf bags through train stations. No forgettable business hotels at the end of a long day. They wanted someone to handle the courses, the cars, the hotels, the meals, and every transfer in between — so all they had to do was show up and enjoy it.

Miramar Japan Golf & Travel planned and operated the full 11-day itinerary: Osaka arrival, Tokyo departure, four rounds of golf, two Toyota Alphards, and a route covering Osaka, Kyoto, Atami, Kawana, and Tokyo. Accommodations ranged from city hotels in Osaka and Kyoto to a traditional onsen ryokan in Atami and an ocean-view room at Kawana Hotel, finishing with three nights in Shinjuku before the flight home.

Why Long Itineraries Work Better for Golfers Flying in from the US

The flight from the US to Japan is long, and the time difference hits hard. Most travelers spend the first day or two just getting their bearings — not the right condition for back-to-back rounds or long drives between cities.

This itinerary was built around that reality. The opening days in Osaka and Kyoto give guests time to settle in, eat well, and move at a slower pace before the golf begins in earnest. Atami and the Izu Peninsula bring the first rounds alongside onsen evenings. Kawana is saved for last — the centerpiece the whole trip builds toward.

The route runs west to east without doubling back. Every stop has a reason to be there, and nothing feels like filler.

Four Courses, Four Purposes: How the Golf Was Sequenced

The first round was at Hannna Country Club, just outside Osaka. The point wasn't difficulty — it was a comfortable warm-up. After a long-haul flight and a day or two of adjustment, the first round should feel easy to settle into: familiar pace, straightforward logistics, no pressure.

The second round was at Izu Daijin Country Club, positioned on the route between Atami and the Izu Peninsula. After the round, the group returned directly to their onsen ryokan — no extra driving, no rushing. Dinner was kaiseki. The evening was theirs.

The third round was at Kawana Oshima Course, followed by check-in at Kawana Hotel. This round sets the tone for Kawana — sea views, resort atmosphere, unhurried pace. After the round, guests walked the hotel grounds, had dinner, and went to bed looking at the ocean.

The fourth round was the main event: Kawana Fuji Course. Designed by C.H. Alison and ranked 62nd in Golf Magazine's World Top 100 Courses for 2024–2025, it's one of the most celebrated layouts in Japan. Walking only, with a dedicated caddie on every bag. The three rounds, two ryokan nights, and one ocean-view evening before it weren't just nice additions — they were the build-up.

Why Three Couples Needed Two Alphards

Six people. Six large suitcases. Six golf bags. Five cities. Over 800 kilometers of driving.

An Alphard comfortably seats three people once you factor in golf bags and full-size luggage. Fitting six into one vehicle doesn't just feel cramped — it genuinely doesn't work with the bag count. Two Alphards gave each couple their own space for the long drives between Kyoto and Atami, and again from Kawana back to Tokyo.

On a trip this long, comfort in the car isn't a luxury detail. It's what makes the whole thing feel like a vacation instead of a logistics exercise.

How the Accommodations Held the Trip Together

City hotels in Osaka and Kyoto kept things convenient — easy access to restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing without unnecessary complications.

The ryokan in Atami was two nights with full board: dinner, breakfast, and onsen included. For couples traveling together, this tends to be the part of the trip they talk about the most. After days of airports, cities, and courses, an evening at a traditional Japanese inn resets everything.

Kawana Hotel was two nights in ocean-view rooms, timed around the Oshima and Fuji rounds. Staying on property isn't just convenient — it makes Kawana feel like a destination rather than a detour. The course, the hotel, the views, and the meals all become part of the same experience.

FAQ

How many days should we plan for a Japan golf trip from the US?

Ten days minimum, ideally eleven or more. The first couple of days after arrival shouldn't have golf scheduled — your body needs time to adjust. This itinerary used Osaka and Kyoto as a natural buffer before the rounds began, which worked well.

Is Kawana Fuji Course worth it?

It's consistently ranked among the top courses in the world — 62nd in Golf Magazine's 2024–2025 World Top 100. C.H. Alison design, walking only, dedicated caddies, ocean views throughout. For golfers who make the trip to Japan specifically for a course like this, it delivers.

Does the driver just handle transportation?

No. Miramar's drivers manage the full day — pickups, drop-offs, golf bag handling, tee time coordination, and anything that comes up along the way. For guests who don't speak Japanese and aren't familiar with how things work here, the driver functions more like a personal travel manager than a chauffeur.

What's the difference between this and a packaged golf tour?

Packaged tours have fixed routes, fixed courses, and fixed hotels. You either fit the package or you don't. Miramar builds the itinerary around your group — your travel dates, your preferred courses, your accommodation preferences, your pace. The entire trip runs exclusively for your party.

Who This Type of Trip Is For

Couples or small groups based in the US, Canada, Australia, or Singapore who want to play serious golf in Japan without managing any of the logistics themselves. They're not looking for the cheapest option. They want a trip that's been thought through properly, with someone on the ground in Japan making sure everything runs.

Two months after they got home, the same group reached out again. Miramar put together their second itinerary: arriving at Narita, then Mito in Ibaraki, Nasu Onsen, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Utsunomiya, Nikko World Heritage sites, and a final round at Narashino Country Club — the course where Tiger Woods won his 82nd PGA Tour title at the 2019 ZOZO Championship.

First trip: Kawana. Second trip: Kanto and the northern countryside. Same group, two completely different versions of Japan.
